NJ Councilman Killed in Crash Day Before Ceremony

A central New Jersey borough councilman has died in a car accident a day before he was to be sworn in to his second term in office.

Authorities tell the Asbury Park Press 53-year-old Keyport resident Clemente Toglia's car crossed into an oncoming traffic lane on Tuesday and collided with another vehicle in nearby Tinton Falls.

It's unknown what caused the crash, which occurred around 3:30 p.m. The driver of the other vehicle suffered a broken wrist.

Keyport officials told the newspaper they planned to go ahead with their organizational meeting on Wednesday. It's unclear when or how they'll replace Toglia, who was a Republican.

Keyport Mayor Harry Aumack says Toglia was well loved and is going to be missed.
