Reading and State Police swarmed Alvernia University after an armed gunman tried to rob a person in the area Monday morning.

The incident is being treated more seriously than a random attempted robbery because the description of the alleged gunman matches the description of an area homicide suspect Matthew K. Perkins, reports 69 News and the Reading Eagle.

Police searched for the suspect for two hours, beginning at 10:50 a.m., locking down the university campus and area businesses. It was spurred on by a man who tried to rob a person near Angelica Park in southwest Reading, authorities told NBC Philadelphia.

Police finally had the campus lockdown lifted around 1 p.m. with no suspect in custody.

Matt K. Perkins is wanted on first-degree murder for the shooting death of 22-year-old Cesar Rivera, and the wounding of two other people, after a party between 11th and Mulberry streets in Reading Saturday, police told the Reading Eagle.
