Three New Jersey gas stations are accused of illegally raising prices in the wake of Hurricane Irene.
The state Weights and Measures Office issued summons to the owners of a Delta station in Trenton, Lukoil station in Cherry Hill and a Citgo in Rio Grande. Inspectors claim the stations raised gasoline prices multiple times within a 24-hour period, in violation of the state's motor fuels law.
Violators face fines of up to $1,500 if convicted.
Attorney General Paula Dow says attempting to illegally profit during someone's time of need following a natural disaster "is shameful."
The state has received 103 consumer complaints related to illegal pricing in the wake of Irene. Seventy-four were determined to be unfounded.
