A divided eastern Pennsylvania school board has decided to close two elementary schools in the Poconos despite protests from parents.
The Pocono Record reports that the Stroudsburg School Board voted 5-4 Wednesday night to close Ramsey Elementary School at the end of the year and Clearview Elementary School after the 2014-15 school year.
Dozens of parents walked out of the meeting after the final vote, which capped a contentious meeting during which members of the audience shouted at board members -- and members sometimes shouted at each other.
Board members who supported the closures cited dwindling enrollment and said the actions will save the district about $600,000.
