1979 Pope John Paul II Visits Philadelphia

In October of 1979, Pope John Paul II arrived in Philadelphia and was greeted by Cardinal John Krol. Cardinal Krol was a Polish American and one of the Pope’s close friends. Mayor Frank Rizzo was also part of the city’s greeting committee that day. He knelt on the runway and kissed the Pope’s ring.
