Man Killed Near College Campus, Students Told to Stay Inside

A Delaware County college campus was put on alert this morning after a shooting victim collapsed on campus. He later died, according to Chester Police.

Students at Widener University received a message from the college around 11 a.m. about a shooting at 12th Street and Melrose in Chester, Pa. -- a short distance from campus.

"Please remain inside until further notice," tweeted the university.

Police and university spokespeople said that after being shot inside his sports utility vehicle at 12th Street and Melrose Avenue, which is across Interstate 95 from the campus, the unidentified drove up Melrose to 14th Street where he fell out of the vehicle.

The section of the street where the man collapsed runs through Widener’s campus.

The man died a short time later.

The university said the man wasn't a student.

As SkyForce10 hovered overhead in the moments after the shooting you could see police vehicles in the area and an SUV being loaded onto a tow truck that was possibly the one the man drove onto campus.

The university lifted its shelter in place order after about 30 minutes.

This wasn't the first time this school year that gun violence struck the Widener community. In January, a student was shot as he sat inside his car in the lot of the Schwartz Athletic Center.
