School Bus Driver, Dump Truck Driver Get Citations for Fatal NJ Crash

The drivers involved in the fatal school bus crash in Chesterfield, N.J., last month have been issued summonses.

    Feb. 16, 2012: A school bus carrying elementary school students collided with a dump truck in Chesterfield, N.J.

    Motor vehicle citations were given to the driver of the school bus and the driver of the dump truck that collided on Feb. 16, killing an 11-year-old New Jersey girl.

    These are not criminal charges.

    An 11-year-old girl, who was also the daughter of a New Jersey State Trooper, died in this morning's school bus crash in Chesterfield, Burlington County, New Jersey.     A summons for failure to stop or yield was issued by the Chesterfield Police Department to school bus driver John Tieman, 66, of Beverly, N.J. , according to the Burlington County Prosecutor’s Office.
    The driver of the dump truck, Michael Caporale, 38, of New Egypt, N.J., received summonses for failure to secure container and failure to tarp load.

    In addition to that, Caporale received summonses from the New Jersey State Police for inadequate breaking, exceeding gross weight, exceeding tire weight limit and over axle weight, according to the prosecutor’s office.

    On Feb. 16 at about 8 a.m. Tieman was driving the school bus to Chesterfield Elementary School when it was struck in the rear driver’s side by the dump truck driven by Caporale at the intersection of Route 528 and Old York Road, the prosecutor’s office says.

    The bus spun into a utility pole.  Eleven-year-old Isabelle Tezla, a triplet and daughter of New Jersey State Trooper Sgt. Anthony Tezsla, was killed in the crash. There were 17 other children injured in the crash.

    The accident is still being investigated by multiple law enforcement.
