Phillies Looking For More Math Geeks

The Philadelphia Phillies are looking to expand their analytics department, but the baseball team isn’t ready to talk about it in detail just yet.

The team has recently posted two jobs online: one seeking a senior quantitative analyst and the other for a senior software engineer.

The listings indicate more hirings for Phillies' research department and development department are on the horizon.

A Phillies spokeswoman declined commenting on the issue saying it was “too premature to discuss the expansion of our analytics department.“

Under Ruben Amaro Jr., the team’s former general manager, the Phillies were not among Major League Baseball’s early adopters of the use of advanced statistics for evaluating players and game strategy. New GM Matt Klentak said, when hired last year, that he views analytics as important part of a “balanced approach,” along with traditional scouting, of player evaluation and acquisition strategy.

At the start of this year, the Phillies lured Andy Galdi away from Google to serve as the team’s director of baseball research & development.

The Phillies even created their own proprietary information system to manage data.

The team's online job postings make it appear his department is about to grow.

The listing for the senior quantitative analyst states the person will “help shape the Phillies baseball operations strategies by processing, analyzing, and interpreting large and complex data.”
