Pa. Voter Registration Deadline Is Monday

Monday is the deadline for Pennsylvanians to register to vote in the Nov. 5 election.

Most of the balloting focuses on the election of judges, school board members and municipal officials across the state who make decisions about important local matters including public schools, taxes, criminal justice, police protection and road repairs.

In Philadelphia, District Attorney Seth Williams, a Democrat, is defending his post against a challenge from Republican Daniel Alvarez.

Democratic City Controller Alan Butkovitz is also running for re-election. He is being challenged by Terrance Tracy, Jr., a Republican.

The only statewide race is for an open seat on the state Superior Court. That contest pits Allegheny County Judge Jack McVay Jr., a Democrat, against Republican nominee Vic Stabile, a Harrisburg lawyer.

Two justices on the Pennsylvania Supreme Court — Chief Justice Ronald Castille and Justice Max Baer — face no oppositions as they seek additional 10-year terms in yes-or-no "retention" votes.

While voters need to be registered to vote, they will not be required to show identification when they visit the polls to cast their ballot.

The voter ID law, which would require citizens to present a driver's license, passport or a special ID card meant to be used just for voting, was put on hold by a Pennsylvania judge for this election as he reviews the case.
