Local Restaurateurs Stand Behind Closing on Thanksgiving

Not feeling the pressure of staying open during a time when retailers are deciding to open their doors earlier on Thanksgiving, some of Philadelphia's restaurants are keeping with the tradition of staying closed on Turkey Day.

"It seems like Thanksgiving is morphing into a shopping day," said Dave Magrogan, owner of Kildare's Irish Pub. "As retailers start opening on 8 p.m., which was previously unheard of, that will drive how restaurant's move and what restaurants do. … [but] I'm still a big believer in closing on Thanksgiving. I've stuck by that principle."

Many retailers across the country are opening up shop at a time when most dinners are taking place: Best Buy is opening its doors on 5 p.m., and Target, Walmart and Macy's will open on 6 p.m.
