Partial Wall Collapse at East Mt. Airy Apartment Building Displaces Residents

A Northwest Philadelphia apartment building has been temporarily closed after an outer wall partially collapsed Monday morning.

A lower stone wall of one building at the Johnson Court Apartments located along the 6325 Crittenden Street in the city's East Mt. Airy section crumbled around 9 a.m., fire officials said.

Seven adults and three children were inside six apartments at the time of the collapse, officials said. The building was evacuated and no one was hurt.

Department of Licenses & Inspections Commissioner Carlton Williams tells NBC10 the owner must provide an engineer's report that the building is structurally sound before residents will be allowed to return.

Displaced residents will be moved to other apartments inside the 76 unit complex, according to Williams.

The cause is under investigation, but Williams said L&I will also inspect the rest of the complex as a precaution. There is no history of past structural issues with the complex, he added.
