Teenage Father Dies in House Fire

A teenager died after fire tore through his Philadelphia home early Monday.

The blaze broke out around 6 a.m. on the 2700 block of Helen Street in the Kensington section of the city.

Firefighters quickly got the fire under control but it was too late for  an 18-year-old found dead inside.

Family members later identified the victim as Christian Rivera, a father to a young boy.

Rivera had spent Sunday at Puerto Rican Day festivities with his 18-month old son Avion, according to family members. The young boy wasn't with his father at the time of the blaze.

Fire Chief Derrick Sawyer said that the man shared the home with his mother who was hospitalized at the time due to an unrelated health issue.

The cause of the blaze remained under investigation. It's possible that the home was without power and that the family lived by candlelight.

Sawyer said that this was the 24th fire death in the city so far in 2014, already tying the total amount of fire fatalities from last year.
