Bear Mauls, Kills Pet Goat as Owners Watch

Police in Pennsylvania say a bear scaled a fence and fatally mauled a family's pet goat as they watched and tried to stop it. A second goat wasn't hurt as the family was able to shoo the bear away with an umbrella.

The Pocono Record reports it happened around 12:15 p.m. Wednesday in Pocono Township.

Pocono Township Police Department Patrolman Robert Furino said the family called police, but that they bear had gone by the time officers arrived. A 60-pound female goat was killed, while a male goat wasn't hurt.

The family used a patio furniture umbrella to shoo the bear away.

"They were upset. I really felt bad for her," Furino told the paper.

Pennsylvania Game Commission spokesman Travis Lau says officials are investigating the goat attack. He says game officials will look for the bear and possibly try to remove it from the area if it's deemed necessary.

The name of the family wasn't released.
