New Jersey Man Suing Amtrak After Derailment in Philadelphia

A northern New Jersey man is suing Amtrak after last year's train derailment in Philadelphia.

NJ.com reports Joshua Pearlstein of Livingston filed the lawsuit on Monday in Newark federal court.

The suit states that Pearlstein seeks punitive damages after suffering "serious, painful and permanent injuries" during the May 12 derailment.

Pearlstein was a passenger on the Northeast Regional train traveling from Washington to Boston. Eight people died in the crash. About 200 others were injured.

Investigators say the train accelerated when it should've decelerated, causing the derailment. The train had been traveling more than 100 mph.

Dozens of lawsuits have been filed against Amtrak stemming from the crash. They're being consolidated and assigned to a federal judge in Philadelphia.

Amtrak officials didn't immediately respond to messages seeking comment.
