Paula Deen Fans Mail Butter Wrappers to Food Network, Retailers in Protest

The campaign adopts a symbolic slogan to defend 66-year-old Deen who was known as a butter lover: “A company without Paula is like a wrapper without butter.”

A group of die-hard Paula Deen fans is getting all wrapped up in a campaign to show they are sticking with her.

They are sending cleaned and folded butter wrappers to companies like Food Network, Home Depot and Walgreens that dropped the celebrity chef amid her racism scandal.

The campaign adopts a symbolic slogan to defend 66-year-old Deen who was known as a butter lover: “A company without Paula is like a wrapper without butter.”

John Schmitt, a hotel auditor in Indianapolis, initiated the butter wrapper campaign out of desire to express his fury over the “betrayal” of the companies that dumped her.

He was the same person who created a Facebook page called “We Support Paula Deen,” which has racked up over 600,000 likes since June 21.

"She made a mistake 20 years ago," Schmitt told CNN. "We all make mistakes. I've said things I regret."

A dozen companies cut ties with Deen following disclosure of a recent court deposition in which she acknowledged under oath that she had used the N-word in the past. In response, Deen ended up firing her legal team and hiring a new set of lawyers.

A former manager of one of Deen’s restaurants has filed a lawsuit against Deen and her brother Earl "Bubba" Hiers over their allegedly discriminatory behavior toward their employees.
