It's Open Season on the “Fair Game” Trailer

The trailer for "Fair Game," starring Naomi Watts and Sean Penn in the big-screen adaptation of former covert CIA operative Valerie Plame's memoir, has dropped and it's a little disappointing.

Director Doug Liman ("Swingers," "Bourne Identity") sets out to tell the story of Plame, whose identity was famously revealed by the Bush Administration, allegedly as punishment for her husband's report disputing President Bush's claims that Saddam Hussein had tried to buy yellow cake uranium for use in building a nuclear weapon.

"Fair Game" was shown in competition at Cannes this year, to generally favorable reviews, but the trailer looks kinda dull. On a strictly physical level, Watts and Penn were well chosen to play Plame and Wilson, with Penn nicely capturing Wilson's bearing.

But the clip is peppered with uninspired readings of what are no doubt meant be dramatic moments. Lines like "My name is everywhere -- my real name!" and "How dare you talk about my wife, you don't know her," just fall with a thud. Maybe they'll work better in context -- let's hope so.

"Fair Game" opens in limited release Nov. 5.
