Union Select CB Lurie, MF Missimo to Complete 2016 Draft

With the 44th and 64th selection in the 2016 MLS SuperDraft, the Union picked center back Mitchell Lurie and midfielder Cole Missimo.

The pair join first-round picks, Joshua Yaro, Keegan Rosenberry, Fabian Herbers, and second-round selection, Taylor Washington, to form a lucrative draft haul for the Union.

Capitalizing on their third-round selection, 44th overall, the Union grabbed another defender in 6-foot-2 Lurie out of Rutgers University. The Atlanta native bounced around colleges, playing at the University of Portland as a freshman and University of Louisville as a sophomore.

In 2011, Lurie was a member of the U.S. U18 National Team. He made 21 starts for the Scarlet Knights, scoring six assists, and was the fourth defender taken by the Union in this draft.

With their fourth-round pick, 64th overall, the Union selected the 6-foot-1 Missimo, a Dallas native out of Northwestern University. From the midfield in 2014, Missimo scored five goals and four assists in 18 starts, but played a more defensive role in 2015, scoring just one goal and adding two assists in 18 games.

Meanwhile, the Union passed on Union Academy alum and Philadelphia native, Darius Madison, who went 70th overall to Toronto FC.
