The final pieces of a West Philadelphia bridge will be coming down over the next few weeks to make way for a new span carrying cars and pedestrians over Amtrak rail lines.
Demolition on the 41st Street Bridge, which spans from Mantua Avenue to Poplar Street, will be entering the final stage beginning Sunday night, the Philadelphia Streets Department said. The razing work will be done between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. to limit disruptions to Amtrak service.
The new bridge will be a two-span, continuous structure and the proposed roadway will include two travel lanes with wide shoulders and sidewalks, new street lighting, and enhanced safety features.
In the latest phase of the project, contractors will remove existing bridge piers adjacent to the Amtrak tracks in preparation for the new bridge which will begin construction on May 1.
The bridge is tentatively scheduled for completion by the end of 2016.
