SPCA Removes 131 Cats From South Jersey Home, More Believed to be Inside

Police and animal control believe they will find cats in the walls of a Pitman home where more than 130 cats have already been rescued.

The number of cats rescued from a hoarder’s home in South Jersey has reached 131 and that number could rise, animal control officials said.

Officials with the New Jersey SPCA began removing felines from a house in the 100 block of 6th Avenue in Pitman last Thursday, a county spokeswoman said.

Pitman police said the animals were being hoarded.

As of Monday afternoon, SPCA officials said 131 cats were removed from the home. Animal control officers believe there are additional cats behind a wall.

Of the 131 cats, 56 were sent to rescues and other shelters for adoptions. Sixty five remain available for adoption at the Gloucester County animal shelter. The “Pitman Cats” are available for $25 each, which includes spay/neuter, all vaccines, micro chipping, etc.

Anyone interested in adopting the rescued cats can pre-apply through the Gloucester County Animal Shelter's website.

The shelter also made a plea for supplies to help care for these and other animals. Officials are looking for donations of cleaning supplies, food, toys and bones and blankets, among other items. People wishing to make donations can call 856.881.2828.

SPCA officers continue to investigate and there's no word on whether charges will be filed against the animals' owner.
