Occupy Philly to Occupy Court

Thirty-one Occupy Philadelphia protesters arrested during the eviction of their City Hall encampment in November are scheduled to go on trial on misdemeanor charges in city court. The trial is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Thursday before Municipal Judge Karen Simmons. The charges include conspiracy, failure to disperse and obstructing a highway in connection with the Nov. 29 eviction. Police raided the group’s nearly 2-month-old encampment after the city ordered the protesters to leave to make way for a construction project. More than 50 people were arrested in the aftermath of the raid, as dozens of protesters began roving through downtown. The protesters had camped outside City Hall in solidarity with Occupy Wall Street in New York, speaking out against economic inequality and what they called corporate greed. As NBC10’s Byron Scott reports, the call is out for Occupy Philly members to show up in court in a show of solidarity.
