U.S. Sen. Bob Casey (D-Pa.) and Philadelphia emergency responders are calling for legislation to provide new resources and training to first responders dealing with oil train derailments.
A proposed bill would create a special derailment task force to craft training recommendations.
Casey and Councilman Kenyatta Johnson (D-Philadelphia) spoke of their plan at a news conference Monday morning in Center City.
Casey's office stated that reasons including 1.5 million Pennsylvanians living with the evacuation zone of a train disaster and dozens of cases of Philadelphia tanker cars having issues -- missing of leaking components that are meant to keep flammable contents in the tanks -- as some of the reason why new legislation is so necessary.
