New Jersey Governor Chris Christie Holds Forum to Press School Funding Plan

Gov. Chris Christie is pressing for support of his school funding plan.

The Republican will hold a public forum in Wall Township on Tuesday afternoon.

Christie wants to provide property tax relief by scrapping a state formula that goes back to a 1985 state Supreme Court ruling requiring that 31 mostly urban, poorer school districts get a "thorough and efficient'' education. Aid would be redistributed from the poorest districts to hundreds of other schools.

Under his plan, each district would get $6,599 of state aid per student instead of the nearly $21,000 that's spent on pupils in poor cities such as Asbury Park, Camden, Newark and Trenton.

Democrats have opposed the proposal.

Senate President Steve Sweeney and other Democrats will discuss the plan Tuesday in Paterson and Union City.
