Camp Tweedale to Close Next Year

After two years of research, it was announced that Girl Scouts of Eastern Pennsylvania will have to say goodbye to Camp Tweedale next June.

In an assessment of Girl Scout camps, the property committee ranked them based on distance, camp programs and the facilities campers preferred. Tweedale did not rank as high as the other camps , according to the Delaware County Daily Times

The Delco Times reports that the organization also took into account how the camps could expand on their programs, which Tweedale had no more space for.

Tweedale in Oxford will close along with Tohikanee in Quakertown and Hidden Falls in Dingman’s Ferry, reports the Delco Times.

Instead, the Girl Scouts will focus on developing Mosey Woods in White Haven, Wood Haven in Pine Grove, and Laughing Waters in New Hanover, according to the Delco Times.

Girl Scout spokeswoman, chief development officer and financial and marketing officer Kim Fraites-Dow believes expansion will cater to the campers.

"We have an opportunity to provide great programming for girls during the summer," Fraites-Dow told the paper.

Local Girl Scout leaders and alumnae held a meeting on June 24 to argue the surveys and studies that were used to assess the camp.

They stressed errors in the studies including a lack of opinions given from actual campers and subjective scores, according to the Delco Times.

The Times reports that a meeting will also be held on July 27 and 28 between board members and local Girl Scout leaders to further discuss the closure.
