Teens' Bonfire Destroys School Playground: Cops

Police say two teenagers, a boy and girl, admitted starting a bonfire earlier in the day, but thought they'd put it out

Police say two juveniles – a boy and a girl – admitted they caused the fire that destroyed the playground at St. Alphonsus Catholic School in Maple Glen.

Sunday's fire gutted the playground area, and police say a nearby maintenance building was damaged from the heat.

The two teenagers told police they had started a bonfire earlier in the day but thought they'd put it out, according to investigators.

Upper Dublin police and fire departments worked together on the case. They analyzed video from a school surveillance camera, interviewed witnesses, investigated at the scene and determined that the fire was purposely set.

Police said they got tip calls after the story first aired on NBC10 the day after the fire, and that is what ultimately led them to the teenagers.

The juveniles face charges of arson, criminal mischief and institutional vandalism.

No one was hurt in the fire, but some students were distressed.

"The students I've talked to are certainly upset about that, but a number of them have already started to do some drawings of what they'd like the playground to look like when we rebuild it," said David Hayden, the school's principal.
