1979 Pope John Paul II Mass in Philadelphia

During his 21-hour visit to Philadelphia in 1979, Pope John Paul II celebrated mass at the Civic Center for 10,000 priests and 3,000 nuns. He also celebrated mass along the Ben Franklin Parkway in Logan Circle, where the altar was a three-story platform was built by city workers.
