The Legendary Uptown on the Rebound

One of the storied venues in America is The Uptown Theater along North Broad Street in North Philadelphia. It began as a movie theater for so-called talkies just before the depression. Later Georgie Woods took it over and in the 1960 s and 1970 s The Uptown became a key stop along a vital circuit for black musicians and singers, as well as for some white artists inspired by black music. On hard times for more than a generation, now The Uptown is on a journey back with an ambitious revitalization plan.
