Delaware Mental-Health Division in Good Shape Despite Departure: Officials

Delaware health officials say the state's mental-health division is in good shape despite the surprise resignation of the division's director last month.

Kevin Ann Huckshorn is a nationally recognized expert in mental health issues. She was recruited in 2009 to help address problems at the Delaware Psychiatric Center and comply with a later settlement with the U.S. Justice Department. She resigned in order to help her parents in Florida.

The News Journal of Wilmington reports that Huckshorn met Saturday with staffers at the Rick VanStory Resource Center in Wilmington and got a standing ovation and a plaque of recognition.

She'll be replaced by deputy Melissa Smith, who says the division is "on a good course." Justice Department monitor Robert Bernstein says Smith is well-suited to carry on reforms.
