Phillies Fire Hitting Coach Milt Thompson

Firing comes after months of lackluster performance by the former World Champs

The Phillies three-month slump has led to the firing of hitting coach Milt Thompson.

The Phils announced late Thursday night that manager Charlie Manuel had relieved Thompson of his duties.

Thompson is the scapegoat for a Phillies offense that is averaging just over three runs a game since may.

Milt was in his sixth season as the team's hitting coach. Before this year, the Phillies had led the National League in most offensive categories.

Former Phillie Greg Gross will take over for Thompson.

Gross was previously the hitting coach for the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs.
