Bullpen Shakeup: Phillies Place Knebel on IL, Reinstate Coonrod

CINCINNATI -- The Phillies have placed reliever Corey Knebel on the injured list and reinstated right-hander Sam Coonrod from the 60-day IL.

Knebel was forced to leave Sunday's game in New York with an injury to his right lat muscle. An examination in Philadelphia on Monday revealed a strain, leading to the pitcher's placement on the IL.

The team did not immediately comment on the severity of Knebel's lat strain but he does have a history with this type of injury. He missed three months with the Dodgers last season with a right lat strain.

Knebel, 30, signed a one-year, $10 million contract with the Phillies last winter. He opened the season as the team's closer but was unable to hang on to the role. He has filled an important setup role over the past couple of months and had allowed just five runs -- all in one outing -- over his last 18 appearances. In 46 games, he has a 3.43 ERA.

The loss of Knebel adds extra importance to the Phillies' trade-deadline acquisition of David Robertson, who already has four scoreless appearances and two saves.

Coonrod, 29, had missed the entire season to this point with a right forearm strain. He had a 4.04 ERA with 48 strikeouts in 42⅓ innings with the Phillies in 2021.

The Phillies open a three-game series in Cincinnati on Monday night.
