MLB Notes: Braves' Front Office Miscue Leaves Team Player Short

CHICAGO -- The Atlanta Braves have added an extra bat for their bench by selecting the contract of veteran utility player Emilio Bonifacio from Triple-A Gwinnett.

Reliever Chris Withrow was optioned to Gwinnett on Sunday to make room on the 25-man roster.

The Braves had been carrying 13 pitchers, and that left them without a right-handed pinch-hitter against Chicago Cubs lefty Jon Lester on Friday.

Withrow allowed an eighth-inning grand slam to Matt Szczur in that game, sending Atlanta to its ninth loss in 10 games. Saturday's game was rained out.

The 31-year-old Boifacio was designated for assignment on the final day of spring training, then signed to a minor league deal. The switch hitter was hitting .333 with 10 stolen bases in 16 games for Gwinnett.

White Sox: Robertson reinstated from bereavement list
BALTIMORE -- Chicago White Sox closer David Robertson has been reinstated from the bereavement list after a three-day absence.

Robertson left the team Thursday following the death of his father-in-law.

The right-hander, who hasn't pitched since Wednesday, was available for Sunday's series finale against the Baltimore Orioles.

White Sox manager Robin Ventura said, "He'll be in there if we have a lead."

Robertson has eight saves and a 0.87 ERA in 10 appearances for the first-place White Sox.

To make room for Robertson, the White Sox optioned right-hander Tommy Kahnle to Triple-A Charlotte.

Angels: Shoemaker optioned to Triple A
ARLINGTON, Texas -- The Los Angeles Angels have optioned right-handed starter Matt Shoemaker to Triple-A Salt Lake in one of five roster moves Sunday.

Shoemaker (1-4) allowed seven earned runs in 2 1/3 innings Saturday night as the Texas Rangers scored six in the third in a 7-2 win. He has a 9.15 ERA in five starts. As a rookie in 2014, Shoemaker went 16-4 with a 3.04 ERA.

Manager Mike Scioscia said the Angels might not need to fill Shoemaker's spot in the rotation until May 14 because of scheduled off days.

Right-hander A.J. Achter was recalled from Salt Lake.

Outfielder Craig Gentry was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a right lumbar spine strain.

Left-hander C.J. Wilson (shoulder) was transferred to the 60-day DL to make room on the 40-man roster for outfielder Shane Robinson, who was called up from Salt Lake. Robinson was in the starting lineup for Sunday's game against the Rangers.
