Del.'s Only Olympian Out of Olympics

Gemmell misses final in 1500M Freestyle by a little more than a second

Swimmer Andrew Gemmell is Delaware’s only Olympian. Fans came out to watch him online as he competed in the 1500M Freestyle around 6:30 a.m. Friday. NBC10’s Tim Furlong was there as his supporters found out whether or not he will continue on.

The First State won’t get any medals this year.

Wilmington’s Andrew Gemmell -- the only Olympian to hail from Delaware -- finished ninth in the Men’s 1,500-Meter Freestyle swim. Gemmell failed to make the eight-man final by just over a second as he swam the 30-lap race in 14:59.05.

Gemmell actually finished third in his heat just outreaching Ukraine’s Sergii Frolov. But Gemmell lost the heat to world-record holder Yang Sun by almost 16 seconds.
