President Donald Trump addressed Congress for the first time to issue a call for immigration reform, strongly condemning illegal immigration and calling for a wall between the United States and Mexico, yet also saying he would be open to laws that made legalization easier for immigrants. Trump spoke strongly against Obamacare as well, saying he wanted “reforms that expand choice, increase access, lower costs, and at the same time, provide better healthcare” instead.
House Speaker Paul Ryan has invited President Donald Trump to give his first State of the Union address to Congress.
The invitation extended Thursday is for Jan. 30 — two months away.
Trump has spoken to a joint session of Congress, giving a speech in February, but he has followed a tradition of presidents usually waiting until after their first year in office is over to give their first State of the Union address.
Here is the text of Ryan's invitation:
"Today, we are in the midst of a historic effort to provide relief to hardworking taxpayers, grow our economy, and rebuild our military for the 21st century. Looking ahead, the new year will bring an opportunity to take account of the progress we have made but also lay out the work that still remains to be done on behalf of the American people. In that spirit, it is my honor to invite you to deliver your State of the Union address before a joint session of Congress on Tuesday, January 30, 2018 in the House Chamber."
