‘Mortified' Mariah Carey Discusses ‘Horrible New Year's Eve'

Carey spoke to Entertainment Weekly in her first interview since the show in which she stumbled through her songs

Mariah Carey says she was "mortified" in "real time" during her disastrous live performance just before the ball dropped on ABC's "Dick Clark's Rockin' New Year's Eve."

Carey spoke to Entertainment Weekly in her first interview since the show in which she stumbled through her songs. At many points she stopped singing, even while a prerecorded vocal track played in the background.

"I’m of the opinion that Dick Clark would not have let an artist go through that and he would have been as mortified as I was in real time," the superstar said.

Carey explained that the mishap won't keep her from performing on live TV, but she will be more cautious.

"It will make me less trusting of using anyone outside of my own team," she said.

While many fans and other celebrities were quick to lash out on social media, Carey added that her "true fans" have shown nothing but love.

Police holds a group of men in front of Hauptbahnhof main railway station, where on New Year's Eve one year ago hundreds of apparently coordinated sexual assaults were perpetrated against women, prior to New Year's Eve celebrations on Dec. 31, 2016, in Cologne, Germany. City authorities have deployed around 1,500 police officers - more than 10 times the amount from last year, to maintain public areas during this year's festivities. Security across Germany is also high due the recent Berlin terror attack, in which suspect Anis Amri killed 12 people when he drove a truck into a Christmas market.

"I am so appreciative of them and everybody in the media that came out to support me after the fact because it really was an incredible holiday season that turned into a horrible New Year’s Eve."

Carey's publicist blamed show producer Dick Clark Productions earlier this week for not addressing technical difficulties before the performance. Carey reiterated that stance to EW, praising the late Clark and saying that he "would not have let an artist go through that and he would have been as mortified as I was in real time." She described the night as "horrible."

The year may have ended with President-elect Donald Trump telling the country to accept the results of the general election, which he won, but it began with Trump in fact not accepting the results of another election — the Iowa caucus, which he lost. Dick Clark Productions has called the Carey camp's claims "absurd."
