Water Main Mess Closes Ridge Avenue in East Falls

Ridge Avenue is closed between Allegheny Avenue and the U.S. Route 1 ramps.

Following a series of water main breaks early Friday morning, Philadelphia Water Department crews worked to fix the break and restore water pressure for nearby businesses and residents. Expect traffic troubles in the area.

Three water mains broke early Friday, closing busy Ridge Avenue in East Falls ahead of the morning rush.

The breaks in 16-inch, 12-inch and 8-inch mains around 12:30 a.m. closed a 0.2-mile stretch of Ridge Avenue between Scots Lane and the U.S. Route 1 ramps, Philadelphia Water Department spokesman John DiGiulio said.

Water department crews stopped the water to customers on the 4000 block of Ridge, 3500 block of Scots and 3500 block of W Clearfield Street, DiGiulio said. Customers in the area could be without water.

Water crews dug in the area Friday morning, DiGiulio said.

SEPTA had to detour its 1, 61 and R bus routes around the scene.

Expect some extra traffic along Kelly Drive and other area roads Friday as the closure continued into the afternoon.
