Dump Truck Overturns, Closes Schuylkill Expressway during Thursday Rush

Wreck leaves 2 hurt

A crash involving a dump truck and a pick-up truck snarled traffic during Thursday’s evening rush and sent two people to the hospital.

An overturned dump truck and pickup truck collided and caused the closure of the eastbound lanes of the Schuylkill Expressway past University Avenue Thursday afternoon.

Traffic backed up for miles behind the wreck.

The wreck stopped all eastbound traffic around 4 p.m. Crews led stuck motorists onto 28th Street -- the auxiliary road that runs along I-76 in that area. Only one lane of traffic got by.

The road finally reopened just before 7 p.m.

Medics rushed one driver to Presbyterian Hospital with serious injuries from the wreck that left the dump truck balancing on concrete barrier. Some sort of wooden trailer also appeared involved in the wreck.

A second person was also hurt, said the Philadelphia Fire Department.
