Hazmat Crews Respond to Leak at South Philly Chemical Plant

A leak at a South Philadelphia chemical plant shut down parts of Columbus Boulevard. Police are warning businesses in the area of Columbus Boulevard and Oregon Avenue to shelter in place, close their doors and turn off their AC units due to the leak.

Hazmat crews responded to a leak at a South Philadelphia chemical plant Tuesday afternoon.

The leak occurred at the Ashland Chemical Plant on 2801 South Christopher Columbus Boulevard. Hazmat crews responded to the scene.

Columbus Boulevard was closed in both directions for several hours. Police also asked businesses in the area of Columbus Boulevard and Oregon Avenue to shelter-in-place, close their doors and turn off their air conditioner units.

The scene was declared safe and Columbus Boulevard reopened Tuesday night. Officials have not yet revealed the cause of the leak.
