The restaurant and bar sector in Atlantic City saw the most increases in employment in the first half of 2016, but employment overall continues to decline, according to a new report.
“Atlantic City’s economy continues to struggle under the weight of the ongoing restructuring taking place in its gaming industry and the related spillover effects on the local economy including Atlantic City’s fiscal health," according to the South Jersey Economic Review by Stockton University's William J. Hughes Center for Public Policy.
Through the first half of 2016, total employment in the Atlantic City metropolitan area declined by 350 jobs year over year, or less than 1 percent, according to the report, which said the weak employment growth was driven by job losses in construction, accommodations and local government.
About 2,400 jobs in these three sectors were lost during the first half of 2016.
