Suspect Runs Over Officer, Drags Another: Police

A suspect in multiple burglaries was taken into custody early Wednesday morning, but not before he injured two Philadelphia Police officers, according to investigators. NBC10’s Katy Zachry has the latest.

A “desperate” burglary suspect on the run struck and injured two police officers overnight.

"This individual intentionally, not only struck officers that were out of their car on foot, but he struck a police car -- he was just desperate to get away,” said Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small. “This is a violent individual who didn't want to get taken into custody very easily."

Bensalem, Bucks County, Pa. police officers used a GPS to track the suspect to H & Tioga Streets in Philadelphia’s Kensington section and called Philadelphia Police to help with the arrest.

Police say the 41-year-old suspect, who was wanted for home and business break-ins in Bucks County and Northeast Philly, was sitting in a Hyundai SUV around 1:45 a.m. Wednesday when plain clothes officers with lights on and badges drawn approached the vehicle. That is when investigators say the suspect tried to make a dash for it by driving into one Philadelphia officer and then speeding off while another officer tried to reach in the driver’s side window.

The suspect dragged the officer about a block, striking a police car and parked cars along the way, until finally coming to a stop, according to investigators.

Officers then surrounded the yet-to-be-identified suspect and got him out of the SUV but the suspect allegedly continued to fight back so officers stunned him with a Taser.

The two officers were taken to Einstein Hospital where they were treated for minor injuries and released.
