Police Arrest Driver After Deadly Northeast Philadelphia Crash

A man is dead and a woman is in the hospital after a driver suspected of being under the influence rear-ended their car on Woodhaven Road.

A man was dead and a woman was in critical condition Sunday after police say a suspected drunk driver rear-ended their car on a Northeast Philadelphia road.

Police said the two vehicles were traveling east on Woodhaven Road near Thornton about 12:30 a.m. when one of the vehicles struck the other, causing that car to hit the median and flip.

The 53-year-old man who was driving the rear-ended car was taken to Aria Health's Torresdale hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 12:57 a.m. A woman who was a passenger in that car, also 53, was hospitalized in critical condition at Aria Torresdale.

Officers arrested the 26-year-old man who drove the striking vehicle at the scene on suspicion of DUI. No official charges had been filed early Sunday morning. That man was not injured in the crash.
