171 Philly Teachers Miss First Day of School

More than 100 teachers in Philadelphia's city schools have already ruined their chances for perfect attendance.

The School District of Philadelphia's human resources chief tells the Philadelphia Daily News that 171 teachers missed the first day of classes on Tuesday.

"It's frustrating. To be absent on the first day of school is telling," said Human Resources Chief Estelle Matthews.

Some of the absences were likely unexpected resignations, according to Matthews..

The Pennsylvania School Code requires teachers to give 60 days notice that they're quitting. It is not clear how many of the
absences were merely unexcused and how many were unexpected resignations.

Matthews says most of the absent teachers are tenured instructors.

The district has about 10,000 teachers.
