The Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency and Army National Guard are helping a northwestern Pennsylvania city without water.
Bradford officials said a 24-inch water main that broke Monday at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford caused 5 million gallons of water to leak, completely draining reserves in the city of about 8,800. Bradford is about 130 miles northeast of Pittsburgh.
The Bradford Era reports PEMA opened an emergency operations center Wednesday and is shipping water to the city and working with retailers to supply bottled water. The National Guard is bringing in at least three portable 500-gallon water buffalo tanks and trying to determine if there's a way to temporarily purify other water supplies until the city's is replenished.
That's expected to take several days.
City schools and the university have canceled classes this week.
