Pay Up! Margate Toll Bridge Hikes Crossing Cost

It's going to cost drivers an extra 50 cents to travel directly into Margate from the Mainland and some South Jersey residents aren't happy.

The Margate Bridge toll went up Monday from $1 a ride to $1.50.

The bridge connects Margate, N.J. (on Absecon Island) with Northfield, N.J. on mainland Atlantic County.

Some daily travelers over the bridge told the Press of Atlantic City that they are unhappy with the toll hike especially in tough times.

A spokesman for the Margate Bridge Co., said the toll increase is needed to cover costs for upkeep on the 80-year-old, 2-mile-long bridge, according to the Press of A.C.

The John F. Kennedy Memorial Bridge on Longport Boulevard and the Dorset Avenue Bridge in Ventnor are other viable options for drivers looking for a free way to get onto the resort island.
