Suspected DUI Driver Crashes Into Parked Car, Flipping It Onto Pedestrian, in Nicetown

A pedestrian was critically injured Friday morning after police say a driver suspected of driving under the influence crashed an SUV into a parked car and flipped the parked car, trapping the person walking and injuring one other person. The driver was in police custody.

A person was in critical condition early Friday after an apparent freak accident in Philadelphia's Nicetown section left the pedestrian trapped under a car.

Police said the victim and another person were walking on Hunting Park Avenue near 16th Street in the wee hours Friday morning when an SUV crashed into a parked car, pushing it onto the sidewalk and flipping it onto the pedestrians. One of them was trapped underneath the flipped car, officials said.

That person was freed and taken to Einstein Medical Center in critical condition. There was no word on the condition of the second pedestrian or the driver of the SUV, who were also taken to the hospital.

Police later said the SUV driver was being taken into custody, suspected of driving under the influence.

Accident investigation officers were at the scene Friday morning investigating the crash. No charges were filed early Friday.
