2.5 Magnitude Earthquake Rumbles New Jersey Town

A small earthquake hit Bernardsville, Somerset County, which is approximately 70 miles from Philadelphia. The 2.5 magnitude quake could be felt in four neighboring counties and has been confirmed by the USGS.

The U.S. Geological Survey confirms a small earthquake shook a town in New Jersey Friday morning.

According to the USGS, a 2.5 magnitude earthquake registered about 3:41 a.m. roughly two miles north of Bernardsville, which is in Somerset County. Bernardsville is approximately 70 miles north of Philadelphia.

USGS geophysicist Zachary Reeves says 78 people reported feeling it.

So far, there are no reports of injuries or damage.

Reeves says such small earthquakes usually don't cause damage, but people will usually feel a little bit of shaking on higher floors.

The USGS says smaller earthquakes are felt in the region every two to three years.

The last earthquake reported in New Jersey had a magnitude of 1.9 and happened about 17 miles east-southeast of Trenton on Dec. 13, 2014.
