Neurologist Loses License Over Improper Prescriptions and Overcharged Medicare: Authorities

State medical officials have revoked the license of a Jersey City neurologist who they say improperly prescribed opiate drugs and fraudulently overcharged Medicare.

The state Board of Medical Examiners also ordered Magdy Elamir to pay a $100,000 fine and $169,009 for the expenses the state Attorney General's Office incurred in investigating him. The board's decision, which upheld the recommendation of an administrative law judge, was announced Wednesday.

Elamir's license has been suspended since 2009, when he was arrested in a sting operation. He later pleaded guilty to lesser charges in the matter and received a suspended sentence.

Authorities have said Elamir wrote prescriptions based only on the verbal requests from nine patients who had been cooperating with investigators.

Elamir can appeal the board's decision in state Superior Court.
