More Women Accuse South Jersey Neurologist of Inappropriately Touching Them

More women are now making allegations against South Jersey doctor Syed Arif Jaffery, saying he touched them inappropriately at his office. NBC10’s Ted Greenberg spoke with one accuser.

More women have come forward accusing a New Jersey neurologist of inappropriately touching them during examinations.

Dr. Syed Arif Jaffery was arrested Tuesday at Premier Neurology, the practice he shares with his wife, along the 3000 block of English Creek Avenue in Egg Harbor Township following a three-month investigation, police said. He has been charged with three counts of criminal sexual contact and was released Tuesday night after posting $25,000 bail.

The investigation began after three patients came forward lodging complaints against the physician over the past year.

“It’s still an active investigation. We just had enough to have warrants issued for his arrest at this time,” Detective Sergeant Fred Spano said.

Jaffery told NBC10’s Ted Greenberg the allegations were not true as he was led past patients in handcuffs Tuesday.

“I don’t know. I have to find out,” the man said as he was questioned about the charges.

The physician’s wife, Kaniz Kahn-Jaffery, defended her husband saying he was a good doctor. “It’s not true,” she said.

After Jaffery's arrest, detectives told NBC10 they received several phone calls with over ten more women accusing him of inappropriately touching them.

"What I'm hearing is that people thought they were the only one and that made them very apprehensive about coming in," said Egg Harbor Township Police Detective Heather Stumpf. "They also felt as though no one would believe them."

One of the accusers, who we are not identifying, spoke to NBC10.

"It's not right to violate women like that," she said. "He told me I had a pinched nerve in my back and when he showed me he went underneath my breast."

Jaffery has been licensed to practice medicine in New Jersey since 2004 and he has not had any prior disciplinary actions levied against him, according to state records. Police told NBC10 they expect to file additional charges against him due to the new allegations.

NBC10 reached out to his lawyer. He told us he had no comment.
