Man Shot After Allegedly Trying to Run Police Officer Over With Car

A man was shot by police officers after he allegedly tried to run them over with a car in Southwest Philadelphia. 

Officials say police officers with the 12th District were investigating a report of a stolen motorcycle around 5:20 p.m. on Elmwood and Island Avenues. According to police, the owner of the motorcycle was trying to buy it back from the two men who stole it.

The two suspects, a 30-year-old man and a 27-year-old man were inside a red Ford when officers arrived, according to investigators. While the officers were apprehending the driver, the passenger allegedly moved to the driver seat and drove towards the officers in an attempt to run them down.

Officials say an officer then fired his weapon, striking the passenger side window. The suspect then continued driving away from the scene, according to police.

Officials say the vehicle was recovered at a short time later at 56th and Wheeler Streets while the suspect was found with a gunshot wound to the right arm. He was taken to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania where he is currently in stable condition. The other suspect was taken into police custody.

Officials have not yet identified the suspects or revealed the specific charges against them. No police officers were injured during the incident.

Officials with Internal Affairs are currently investigating the shooting. The officer who opened fire is currently on administrative duty pending the outcome of the investigation.
