Man Says Wal-Mart Shoplifting Was for a Lost Bet

Man stole nutcracker, decorative tree as an alternative to running naked in the street

Irwin Krakow is no welcher.

The 58-year-old man was arrested on charges of shoplifting at a South Jersey Wal-Mart Saturday afternoon.

But unlike the usual suspects, Krakow’s alleged motive was not to sport the hottest Wal-Mart apparel. It was to make good on a bet he lost.

The Millville resident told police that he was given two options to repay a lost wager: Steal $50 worth of merchandise from the Millville Wal-Mart or run naked through the street.

Though it was a warmer-than-usual February day last week, Krakow opted to steal a decorative tree, a nutcracker, a USB card, two dinner spoons and T-shirts, rather than run naked through the street, according to police.

Krakow reportedly told police that he regretted his actions. He said he should have run naked, as it would have been a smaller fine.

The alleged crime and motive were first reported by The Daily Journal of Vineland.

For all of his efforts to “pay up” on his bet, Krakow still fell short. According to police, his eclectic choice of merchandise only added up to $43.82.

It is not yet known what the bet was about.
