Man in Custody for Shooting Teen Girl

Police have arrested a man who allegedly shot a 17-year-old girl in the arm late Wednesday night in the Wissinoming section of Philadelphia.

A teenage girl is in stable condition after a man shot her from point blank range late Wednesday night in Northeast Philadelphia.

Authorities said they have a 38-year-old man in custody in connection with the shooting that occurred on the 5900 block of Cottage Street in the city's Wissinoming section around 11 p.m.

Police rushed the victim to St. Christopher's Hospital, where she underwent surgery, according to Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small said.

"The bullet broke her right arm," Small said.

The victim was sitting along Cottage Street with a man when the gunman walked past, he said.

The group began arguing and the suspect pulled out a gun and began firing as the teenager ran towards her grandmother's house nearby, he said.

Within minutes of responding to the shooting, police officers found a man fitting witnesses' descriptions of the shooter a short distance away and took him into custody, Small said.

The man also had an outstanding warrant out for his arrest, according to police.

Investigators said they recovered five shell casings at the scene.
