NBC10’s Erin Coleman has more on Kevin Hart Day and how the city celebrated the hometown comedian with a mural dedication near his childhood home.
Philadelphia is showing some "Brotherly Love" to one of its most recognizable Hollywood stars on his birthday.
"Kevin Hart Day" is set to take place Thursday in his native Philadelphia. The free public celebration, led by Councilman-at-Large David Oh and Mural Arts Philadelphia, will include performances from Philly artists Freeway, Chill Moody, the International DJ Casper and Bria Marie.
The resolution, introduced by Councilman-at-Large David Oh, serves as a recognition for Hart's dedication to the arts and his hometown.
“Kevin Hart is a fantastic ambassador for the City of Philadelphia, and this is a simple way to show him gratitude,” Councilman Oh said. “Whether through his hilarious sense of humor or through his heartfelt generosity towards his hometown, Kevin Hart knows how to bring a smile to everyone in Philadelphia.”
During Thursday's event, Councilman Oh will welcome Hart back to his childhood neighborhood. Hart will also receive an official citation declaring his birthday, July 6, as Kevin Hart Day in Philadelphia. Mural Arts Philadelphia will also dedicate a new mural, a portrait of Hart, on Max's Steaks, located a block away from the comedian's childhood home near the intersection of 15th Street and Erie Avenue, where he lived in a one-bedroom apartment with his mother and older brother.
The free event will also include food, games, art activities and music throughout the day with special appearances by Phillies players Odubel Herrera, Howie Kendrick, Nick Williams and the Phillie Phanatic. Community members and families are all welcome and encouraged to attend.
Hart has donated thousands of dollars to improve the lives of youth in Philadelphia — from giving $250,000 to the School District of Philadelphia and Parks and Recreation facilities for new computers to sponsoring college scholarships valued at $50,000 each for four Philly high school students.
The comedian, who is among the highest paid, has also put his hometown on the map of the film industry.
